Akpraise Media Unveils the most controversial Nigerian celebrities of 2017

2017 has been an amazing year so far. But a certain group of people even made it more interesting for all of us.

Akpraise Media in no particular order has curated a list of 10 Nigerian celebrities who we think were the most controversial Nigerian celebrities of 2017.

Self acclaimed Snapchat queen Bobrisky started the year by saying he was going to start charging N10k for anyone who wants to view his videos on Snapchat. When that did not work, he started saying he would love to be a woman. He also visited the UK and America where he held several meet and greets.

He was arrested due to his fight with beauty entrepreneur Toyin Lawani, he made his gateman Jacob famous until they fell out and who can forget his beef with popular musician MC Galaxy

Big Brother Naija

Apart from creating a new set of celebs, the show held Nigerians spellbound at the beginning of the year. The way strangers banded together to vote rising musician Efe as the winner made one believe in the power of unity. So far, only Bisola is showing a sign of becoming a full blown celeb even after the show has ended.


The Okoye brothers, Jude, Paul and Peter disappointed quite a number of their fans when they confirmed that their musical partnership known as PSquare will exist no more. But we weren’t ready for how the brothers began throwing shots at each other especially on social media.

One thing fans got from their fact is that both brothers have now shown the world that indeed, they are very different musicians.

Tonto Dikeh

2017 was the year the actress and her now ex-husband Olakunle Churchill played out a soap opera in the full glare of Nigerians. Allegations of cheating and many other issues led to the dissolution of the marriage of the once celebrated couple and Tonto even paid back her bride price. Let’s hope Tonto focuses on her career come 2018.

Funke Akindele

When news broke that popular actress Funke Akindele was expecting her first child, many were ecstatic. Then rumours began circulating that she had lost the twin babies she was expecting. But the actress has denied that this was the case. Whatever the reports are, we just hope Funke delivers successfully.

Burna Boy

Burna Boy got into public consciousness because of his unbelievable antics. First he declared his intention of physically assaulting pastors, then came his case with Mr 2kay that saw him declared wanted by the police. He was arrested and is currently out on bail.

Mercy Aigbe

This was the year Mercy finally shed the tag of Yoruba actress, coming into her own as a fashionista. Unfortunately, the way her marriage to Lanre Gentry packed up changed her narrative in 2017. Allegations of domestic violence on her husband’s part did not help matters also.

Dammy Krane

At the beginning of the year, Dammy Krane sort of ‘disappeared’ from the music scene until he announced his return with news that he was involved in a credit card scam in America. It is unclear if he has been cleared of the charges levelled against him. he has since returned to Nigeria to try and kick start his music career.


Media personality Freeze has gotten under the skin of many respected men of God in 2017 than any other person. His stance on tithing even got him curses from so called ‘Christians’ who did not agree with him. He has even launched a #Tithingagainstpoverty campaign asking people to use their tithes to lift people out of poverty instead of giving pastors.

Wizkid and Davido

In a year were Wizkid and Davido dominated headlines due to their music exploits, both stars achieved amazing feats music wise in 2017. But the constant fight for supremacy between both guys almost turned into a full blown war. Both musicians refused to accept that one was better than the other.

They dragged their fans into their beef splitting the music industry into two camps.
